Embedded system development workflow consists of requirements specification, system design, functional modeling, system implementation, and system development. Currently, there exists a disconnect between high-level system functional modeling activities and the final system implementation. This disconnect occurs after the functional model is verified and development of the final implementation begins. Embedded systems developers lack adequate tools to directly translate the functional model into target hardware without completely re-architecting the system using an intermediary procedural or declarative language. Currently, this phase is mostly performed by hand and is often error-prone. The gap between system modeling phase and hardware implementation effort can cause severe difficulties in development and the verification of the implementation against the original model. The focus of this thesis is to create a tool that bridges this workflow gap, thus alleviating the difficulties in a multi-phased embedded systems development effort. The proposed tool, named Python for Embedded Systems (PfES), allows the designer to create a simulation and verification solution in the Python computer language, and automatically translates the simulation model into lower level code that can be executed by the embedded system hardware. This tool eliminates the error-prone redesign step between system modeling and implementation. PfES is proof-of-concept software that demonstrates the feasibility of automatic translation of Python to C in order to reduce the time required from inception to realization of an embedded system. The results of a simple experiment using a representative application are presented in this thesis to demonstrate the viability of the PfES as a development tool to bridge the disconnect between modeling and implementation in the embedded systems domain.
