Digital control of mechanical systems using microcontrollers has been impacting current technology developments in embedded systems for quite some time. Advances in Digital Signal Processing (DSP) and their applications have revolutionized the controls system market. One such low volume prototyped application is presented here. A DSP based system was developed in which the DSP core acted as a Proportional Integral Derivative (PID) controller, to control the displacement of a translator in a precision measurement instrument. To do this, a Texas Instruments' TMS320C6711 DSP was interfaced via a serial port with compatible 16-bit Analog-to-Digital and Digital-to-Analog converter hardware. These converters have been produced by prototyping them, along with other components, on a circuit board (referred to as 'niner' board) to function as a PID controller. This system was then serially interfaced with a host PC and software algorithms were developed to support data transfer between the host and the DSP. These algorithms were written using Texas Instruments' Code Composer Studio. This DSP controller was tested and verified by observing its frequency response and step response. It was successfully tuned using the Zeigler-Nichol's method of tuning. The results obtained are as attached.
