Measurement of small signals is a fundamental technology for many physical systems. Currently, lock-in amplifiers are available for such measurements, but they are not able to cope with nonlinearities and other associated complexities required for the conversion of signals for system controls (i.e. reactance to displacement conversion or PID functions for controllers) and therefore cannot be integrated with systems. Digital signal processors, DSP's, in combination with analog to digital conversion hardware, are capable of providing analog signal conditioning, non-linear compensation, real-time control, numerical analysis and data transfer to a host computer for systems integration. The overall objective of the project is to develop a marketable, DSP-based, precision oscillator-synchronous demodulator for monitoring of capacitance displacement gages. To do this, a Texas Instruments' TMS320C6711 DSP was interfaced via a serial port with compatible state-of-the-art 16-bit Analog-to-Digital and Digital-to-Analog converter hardware. This system was interfaced to a host PC and software algorithms were developed to support data transfer between the host and the DSP. These algorithms were written in C/C++ and visual basic using Texas Instruments' Code Composer Studio as the development tool. This system was then integrated and evaluated for 4 different mechanical systems each requiring different algorithms and implementation. Lastly, suggestions addressing the next generation of hardware to provide high speed, higher-resolution, -accuracy, and better data transfer are presented.
